Enjoying a quiet evening on their screened in back porch, Robby and Beth were relaxing, after the excitement of the day. Robby watched a baseball game, with the volume down low and Beth read a book, but her thoughts were never far from her friends, who were both dealing with incredibly difficult endings to their respective marriages. Beth had no doubt that Sandy had fallen for Jamie and after today, she was sure Jamie had been smitten by Sandy, too.

The crickets and frogs sang their summer songs, at the top of their lungs. Over the cacophony of nature sounds, they heard a car pull up in front of the house. A car door opened and closed followed by Doug’s drunken voice, shouting from the front yard, “Sandy! I’m sorry!

Sandy!”

Beth sat up. “Is that Doug?”

“Sounds like him,” Robby said, “Who else would be looking for Sandy?”

Doug shouted again, “Sandy! Please come home.

I’m sorry! Sandy!”

Beth stood up, setting her book down. “It sounds like he’s drunk off his ass.”

Jake came onto the back porch. “Did you know that Mr. Canter is in our front yard, screaming for his wife?

He sounds drunk.”

“I better go get him,” Robby said, standing and stretching. Robby was that kind of guy. As wired tight as Beth was, Robby was just as laid back. It worked for them.

Beth looked at Jake. “Go make coffee. I’m going to find Sandy.”
